At the end of this activity, students should be better able to (select as many as apply):
stay committed to a course of action
pivot
Divide the class into groups of 5 to 6.
Divide the board into 3 sections, and give each section a sub-heading related to the topic. This could be anything - it could be 3 specific content categories, it could be types of questions, it could be 3 different opinions around the topic. (It could even be a set of questions divided up into 3.) This really depends on the topic and the subject.
Tell the groups they have to populate the 3 sections, in other words, they have to generate information or provide answers for the 3 sections. In their groups, they have to think of something that fits in that section and put it up on the board. They have 10 minutes to do this. (The best way to do this is by using post its of different colours for each group.)
Once the 10 minutes are up, go through the submissions. Remove all incorrect submissions. Award 5 points for all correct ones.
Also, for each section, award a bonus 15 points to the group with the most correct submissions and 5 points to the group with the second most correct submissions.
15 MINUTES
None
Deciding whether to stick to one section or to diversify between multiple sections forces groups to pick a course of action. If another group has more contributions than them in a specific section, should they give up on it? Do they have a chance in other sections? Groups will have to choose between staying committed or pivotting
