Activity

This activity works best at the end of a particular topic or chapter.

Divide the class into groups of 5 or 6.

Write down the following big global concerns on the board:

- world hunger

- climate change

- rising inequity

(these concerns are just examples and can be changed to anything else)

Tell the groups they have to pick any one of these concerns, with no more than 3 groups working on a specific concern. This can be done on a first come, first served basis or through bidding. Do not spend too much time on this.

Once all groups have picked a big global concern, tell them they have to make a presentation on how the topic or chapter they have just learnt is useless in dealing with that particular global concern. This could be a direct relevance or something that needs to be applied. Give the groups about 8 minutes to work on their presentation, which should last no more than 2 minutes. Make it clear that they will be stopped as soon as their 2 minutes are up.

Once their time is up, give the groups their 2 minutes each to make their presentations. Stop them as soon as their time limit is up!

Once all groups are done, tell the class to imagine that they had to submit only one of the presentations to the UN and they will have to vote on which one it is. Take a vote. The group whose presentation gets the most vote wins!

Rationale

Selecting the issue they want to work on is a way for the to practice being proactive and to look for opportunities.

Linking what they have learnt to larger global issues is not an easy task and requires understanding both the topic learnt as well as the global issues. And some connections will not be obvious. This is an excellent way to get participants to have vision and see beyond what is right in front of them.

Voting at the end also encourages students to have vision because they have to recognise the possibilities of the presentations made.
