Objectives

At the end of this activity, students should be better able to (select as many as apply):

express themselves

understand others

Activity

Divide the class into groups of 5-6 students.

Whatever content or new information it is that they are supposed to learn, divide this equally between the groups. (So each group gets a specific number of paragraphs, or pages, or even steps to read.)

Give the groups the appropriate amount of time to read their specific portions and try to understand them as much as possible. Get the members of the groups to discuss their understanding of what they have read. From this point on, they can no longer refer to their source material.

Then ask someone from each group to stand up. This standing group member will now move to another group (1 to the left, for example) and join them. Give the class some time. The group must now explain their understanding to the new group member, who must also share what she knows from her previous group.

When time is up, ask another member of each group to stand again. They must now move to another group, not one with any of their original group members (so 2 to the left for example). Give time to share and exchange ideas again.

Keep doing this for as long as necessary or for as long as there is time.

Send all members back to their original groups and give them time to share information they have received with their group members.

Then get each group to make a presentation of what they have learnt. Check to see if groups managed to get the right information and correct misunderstandings. Alternatively, you can now conduct a quiz based on the information and see which group got the most right

Time Needed for Activity

30 MINUTES

Additional Resources

None

Rationale

Being the only person in the group who has specific information will encourage participants to express themselves in a way that they can be understood.

Not having all the information needed, will encourage participants to listen carefully to those who are sharing.
