At the end of this activity, students should be better able to (select as many as apply):
read body language and tone
manage conflict
Divide the class into groups of 5-6 students.
Get the groups to appoint 1 leader. Once the activity starts, the group leader is the only person who can talk. Any other member who talks will cause their group to be disqualified.
The group should appoint 1 anchor. The anchor is the member the group sends to the front of the class once they are confident they have completed the task or are ready to stop. Once the anchor is sent to the front of the class, that group has to stop working. Once all but one group has sent an anchor to the front of the class, the remaining group will also have to stop and send their anchor to the front.
The group should appoint 2 people in charge of picking scoring opportunities. These 2 will select the scoring opportunities by blindy drawing from a deck of cards. (Refer to ‘additional resources’ for scoring opportunities.) They must remember they cannot speak and therefore cannot explicitly tell the others what their scoring opportunities are. (Ensure that the 2 group members do not get the same scoring opportunity - the 2 group members must NOT know the others’ scoring opportunity.)
The remaining group member(s) will be the scribe. If more than one, they will have to take turns scribing.
Once all members are appointed, give out the question(s)/task you want them to do for the lesson. This works best with questions that have specific discrete answers.
The leader, who is the only one who can talk, will have to try to determine the answers from the group purely through their facial expressions. The scribe(s) will write down the answers.Once the questions are complete, the anchor has to go to the front of the class.
Once the activity ends (with all but one anchor at the front of the class), you can go through the answers. Each correct answer earns a group 5 points.
The scoring opportunities are now revealed and additional scores are now given to each group based on these.

Because group members have hidden agendies, some directly contradicting each other, the groups will learn now to manage conflict.
Because they cannot talk, they will learn how to read body language.
