Objectives

At the end of this activity, students should be better able to (select as many as apply):

analyse

evaluate

Activity

Divide the class into groups of 5 to 6.

Each group has to write down 3 statements/equations based on the topic being learnt.

Two of the statements should be true and one statement should be false or a distractor.

Give the groups about 10 minutes to do this.

Start with any one group. They should read out their 3 statements. The other groups should try to figure out which statement is not true and write it down. Do not reveal answers yet.

Repeat with the next group and keep going until all groups have read out their statements.

Then go through the answers. Awards the points as follows. Start with the first group. If their 2 true statements are in fact correct and their 1 false statement in fact be incorrect, they automatically get 10 points. They get 5 additional points for all groups that did not manage to identify their false statement. All the groups who identified the false statement should get 5 points for themselves.

However, if any one of their true statements is incorrect or is their false statement is correct, all the other groups automatically get 10 points and they get nothing.

Time Needed for Activity

15 MINUTES

Additional Resources

None

Rationale

Discerning between true and false statements encourages students to think about what they hear before automatically assuming it is true. It forces them to analyse and evaluate the validity of all information presented to them
